7 Reasons to Watch Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares

Happy Blogmas Day 4!

Stop what you’re doing and put this show on now, I can guarantee that it will instantly improve your mood and will start putting you in the festive spirit! This magical christmassy YA adventure has finally got its TV adaptation and it everything you need for a cosy winters night. All eight episodes, capture the whirlwind romance between the cynical Dash and the optimistic Lily, as they trade dares, dreams and desires in a little red notebook that hide in different locations across New York City! Yes, this is an adorable teenage love story but it is also a story about stepping out of your comfort zone and one which everyone can enjoy.

If that hasn’t sold you, then here’s 7 reasons why Dash and Lily needs to be on your watchlist this December!

All the Adorable Chrismassy Vibes

Christmas this year is a little different, and I know I’m not the only one when I admit that I not feeling very festive yet, but this show fixed everything and reminded me why I love this time of the year! The show embodies everything wonderfully magical about Christmas but you don’t have to love Christmas to enjoy it!

The Characters

When it comes to Christmas, you’re either a Dash or a Lily. And I’m 100% a Lily! I’m always skeptical when adaptations bring beloved characters to life but I was pleasantly surprise and I can’t praise the casting enough! I hadn’t heard of either of the actors that play Dash and Lily, but they’ve definitely made their mark and are now on my radar!

Midori Francis as Lily is genius, everything about her makes her such a heartwarming and loveable character who steps out of her comfort zone and learns to believe in herself. Her journey throughout the show and battle with insecurities was beautifully intimate and resonated with me on a personal level. Again, the casting for Dash was spot on! Austin Abrams carries the perfect amount of festive cynicism and youthful uncertainty that enables him to fall in love with the girl in the pages and to let himself be whisked away by light-hearted dares.

New York at Christmas

It’s been a dream of mine to one day visit New York during the festive period but with everything going on this year, I’ll settle for the next best thing. Both the book and the show are a love letter to the city and takes us on a journey through the streets of NYC as they attempt to complete each other’s increasingly elaborate dares. The city comes alive with festive magic and celebrates the beauty and hidden gems of the city. We also get to experience the ionic wonder of the The Strand, a place every reader has on their bucket list! I don’t want to spoil anything but that end scene was GOALS!

All The Different Relationships

Not only do we get to experience Dash and Lily’s blossoming relationships, but Lily’s brother Langston’s. Just like me he’s a hopeless romantic and loves to play the matchmaker role alongside his boyfriend Benny. Their dynamic relationship and blossoming romance was one of my favourite elements of the entire show and never failed to put a smile on my face! They help Lily discover the courage to make the notebook and continue on this romantic and festive adventure.

The Perfect Binge Watch

Each episode is only 25 mins long and are so easy to watch, making them the perfect show for either casual viewing or an evening binge watch. I will confess that I watched the entire series in one evening and it definitely helped me get into the Christmas spirit!

It’s a GOOD YA Adaptation

I beginning to trust Netflix more when it comes to adapting beloved YA adventures, and this was no exception! I will admit its been years since I read the book but there are elements I instantly remember when I saw them on screen! Of course there’s a little bit of tweaking and a fresh take on things but I thought they did a really good job at creating a unique and adorable Christmas romance that everyone can enjoy.

The Soundtrack

One of the most underrated elements of any TV show and if you’re ever struggling to find a playlist to listen too, then search your favourite TV shows! It’s got the perfect mix of Christmas classics, Joni Mitchell and some new favourites. Plus we get a cameo from The Jonas Brothers and a snippet of their new Christmas anthem ‘Like It’s Christmas’!

7 Reasons to Watch Gilmore Girls

Like many people during lockdown, I used my time accordingly and started a new TV show and have now ultimately fallen victim to the heartwarming wonder that is Gilmore Girls. Every episode feels like a coffee date with your favourites characters, as we follow them on their journeys filled with life’s ups and downs. I can guarantee that your mood will be instantly improved after just one episode!

Side effects include: Lots of tears and a new/heightened addiction to coffee.

  1. Its Relatable – We’ve all got a bit of Rory Gilmore in us and have all, at some point, been in the shoes of one of our characters. We follow a mother-daughter relationship and Rory’s educational journey from high school to her life after graduating. I’ve just finished the final season and I’ve never related more to a character than I have to Rory, her unnerving prospect of the unknown beyond graduating is a state that I still haven’t escaped.
  2. Characters – It’s not just the vast array of the show’s characters that make this show such an enjoyable watch, but all of their interactions are priceless. I can already feel Lorelai’s wit, Emily’s authority and Michele’s sarcasm rubbing off on me and I’m having to think a lot more before I speak!
  3. Relationships – The show is about a mother-daughter relationship and love in all it’s forms. There are so many different heartfelt relationships and love interests that will make you feel all cosy inside and even frustrated at times. Rory and Lorelai surround themselves with a network of friends and support that never fail to pick them up when they’re at their weakest, and it’s just so lovely to watch!
  4. Honest – This show isn’t just sunshine and rainbows, it certainly has it’s fair share of thunder storms and hurricanes! The show tackles the ups and downs of various relationships and the problems we all face when growing up.
  5. Yet Hilarious – As I’ve mentioned previously Lorelai’s quick witted comebacks and conversations are one of my favourite aspects of the show and perfectly capture the lightheartedly free and joyous persona of her character. And Rory is just the same, we get two for the price of one!
  6. Stars Hollow – As someone who has grown up in a little town of her own, I can totally relate to all the gossiping, town meetings and sense of community. There’s just something heartwarming about being apart of a big village family that makes you feel truly at home and the unique cast of Stars Hollow captures that beautifully.
  7. Inspiring – The two biggest things I take away from this show is the importance of friends and family and the outcome of hard work. I know these characters are fictional but both Rory and Lorelai work hard to get to where they are and are both able to achieve their dreams. This show is the perfect motivator for anyone looking to reach their goals and to start following their dreams.

7 Reasons to Watch The Bold Type

A friend at University recommended this show to me and I am now in love! The Bold Type is easily one of my all-time favourite TV shows because its everything that I aspire to be and I’d give my left arm to be one of these characters! The show centers around three best friends working at the high-end magazine ‘Scarlet’ and is inspired by the life of “Cosmopolitan” editor in chief, Joanna Coles. The show provides us with a glimpse into the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for a global women’s magazine and their struggles are about finding your identity, managing friendships and getting your heart broken, all while wearing the perfect jeans to flatter any body type. Anyway, if you’re looking for a new TV show to binge then I can’t recommend this one enough, its funny, heartwarming and full of badass women who aren’t afraid to speak their minds!

  1. Characters – These girls are everything and I’m utterly in love with their relationship with each other and their lives in general because they are living the dream. You’ve got Sutton, the fashion conscious assistant who is working her ass off to make it in the very competitive world of fashion. Then there’s Kat the social media head, who we accompany, on her journey of sexual discovery. And finally, we have my favourite Jane, an aspiring and hardworking journalist who we see grow throughout the show!
  2. Storylines – This show tackles so many prominent and different issues that society is facing today including racism and sexual harassment and they deal with them in an inspiring and confident way which I really enjoyed. The season 1 finale is particularly touching and emotional.
  3. Fashion – The perks of working at a women’s magazine are all the incredible fashion pieces and I am just in love with all the outfits in this show! They’re bold and beautiful and have even inspired me to spice up my wardrobe and add some pieces I would never have thought of trying!
  4. Romance – This show openly explores sex and different relationships which again is really refreshing and even relatable which you don’t usually find with TV Shows. There are heterosexual and homosexual relationships and both get equal screen time and are both equally as romantic and cute!
  5. Friendship – As I’ve already mentioned there are lots of relationships in this show but most importantly is the relationship and friendship between the three girls.  They are always there to support each other truly are the perfect group of girlfriends!
  6. Humour – These ladies provide the perfect comic relief and manage to get themselves in some unexpected and always hilarious situations that will easily put a smile on your face!
  7. Girl Power! – I’m going to use this point not to talk about the three main ladies but some of the equally powerful and inspiring side characters. Jacqueline the editor of Scarlet is one of my favourites in the show, she challenges the male-dominated board and strives to make her magazine an empowering and open feature. Then there’s Adena, a unique and powerful Muslim photographer whose work is so clever and beautiful! This show is full of powerful women who are making their mark on the world and it really is inspiring.

7 Reasons To Watch The Shannara Chronicles

These posts seem to be doing really well and have been getting some great responses, so we might keep doing them but it does worry me how we haven’t run out of TV shows yet!? The Shannara Chronicles will definitely be on my 2016 favourites list, as not only is a book-to-tv show adaptation but it is a perfect fantasy adventure with an amazing (and good looking) cast and storyline.

1. The Cast – Not only are they all extremely good looking but their acting, portrayal of characters and relationships on and off screen were all amazing and it was really easy to fall in love with them and their storyline!  Austin Butler, Poppy Drayton, Ivana Baquero and Manu Bennett are just some of the names and are all just brilliant. I seriously can’t wait to see more of them in season two!

2. The CGI and Special Effects – Some of the best special effects and CGI I’ve seen on a TV show, and it really helps bring this magical and wonderful world to life. The makeup and prosthetics were also brilliant, realistic and pretty scary at times.

3. The Soundtrack – One of the most forgotten elements of every show I think, but seriously along with Reign it is one of my favourites, including the theme song,  Midnight by Coldplay and Introspective by New Division. Even if you don’t watch the show I recommend that check out its playlist on Youtube here.

4. The Storyline –  There are so many twists, cliffhangers and action  in this show, I can promise you that you won’t be disappointed or bored. There’s also a little bit of romance and magic which is cleverly intertwined with the plot.

5. The Fight Scenes – When I think of fight scenes not only do I think of the action in every single episode but mainly the season finale which is just so dramatic and had me on the edge of my seat from the whole thing! Each scene is cleverly choreographed and badass, it makes me wish that I was in the action with them!

6. The Costumes – Again, they are some of my favourites (besides Reign) especially Amberlee’s dresses and outfits. Everything is so fitting to the world and is just so elegant from the ball gowns to the armour.

7. It’s a Book-TV Adaptation – This means that we get to see some of our favourite characters come to life and if you’re a huge fan like me and haven’t read the books, you can start reading them along with the series and get a sneak peak into what’s going to happen in season 2!
