O.W.L.s Magical Read-a-Thon TBR

It’s the most magical time of the year as it’s time for the first instalment of the 2020 Magical Read-a-thon, and it’s fair to say that I am beyond excited! I’ve been re-watching all the films in preparation. This is my first time participating and I’m already so impressed and amazed at all the resources and creativity behind this reading event, so I want to say a HUGE thank you to G over at The Book Roast for all of her hard work! It’s not too late to join so I’ll leave a link to the website here, where you’ll be able to find all the reading prompts and wizarding careers.

The magical read-a-thon is a month long reading event that celebrates the magical universe J.K Rowling has created and the love of reading. The read-a-thon has two main events: the Ordinary Wizarding Level Exams and the Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests, two of the main exams that Hogwarts must sit during their time at Hogwarts. The read-a-thon is designed to mimic these exams in a creatively fun and reading manner by associating different subjects with various reading challenges. The first read-a-thon for the O.WL.s takes place in the month of April, whilst N.E.W.T.s happen during the month of August. Your results and success in the O.W.L.s also contribute to your N.E.W.T.s which in turn determine your chosen wizarding career.

I’d love to know if you’re participating this year and all about your chosen career and TBR, so please leave a link in the comments below!

Anyway, let me reveal my chosen careers and my ambitious TBR!

Auror (5 O.W.L.s)

The profession of an Auror has always fascinated me, and has been shown throughout the series to be such an adventurous, dangerous and intense job! I’m ready for the challenge, so bring it on!

Charms – Lumos Maxima: A Book with a White Cover

The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson. It’s taken me almost two years to read this book so I’m hoping that the pressures of meeting my reading/career targets will finally motivate me to read this book!

Herbolgy – Mimbulus Mimbletonia: Title Starting with M

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers, I know this doesn’t start with M, but there is a M in the title and there is a book in the series that starts with M? I found it really hard to find a book I wanted to read that started with M, if you’ve got any recommendations then please let me know!

Potions – Shrinking Solution: Read a Book Under 150 Pages

Chéri by Collette. This was our March book of the month for my Reading Between the Wines book club and I plan to read this at the start of the read-a-thon before our group FaceTime catch up!

Transfiguration – Animagus: A Book/Series that Includes Shapeshifting

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer or Socery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson.

Defence Against The Dark Arts – Grindylows: A Book Set Sea

These Rebel Waves by Sara Raasch or The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I’m torn between which book I want to read as both sound really good, this is definitely my favourite prompt!

Hogwarts Professor (7 O.W.L.s)

McGonagall and Lupin are some of my favourite Hogwarts Professor’s so I’d love to follow in their footsteps and be Head of Gryffindor House and an Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor!

Care of Magical Creatures – Hippogriffs: A Creature with a Beak on the Cover

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater or King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo. The Raven Boys have been on my radar for a while now, I remember starting it but can’t recall why I stopped reading? As for King of Scars, Leigh Bardugo is one of my all time favourite authors and I can’t resit a bit of Nikolai!

History of Magic – Witch Hunts: A Book Featuring Witches/Wizards

Truthwitch by Susan Denard/ Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. Both of these book have been on my TBR for ages, so hopefully that will help motivate me!

Astronomy – Night Classes: Read a Book When it’s Dark Outside

Legendary by Stephanie Garber. Another book that I’ve been going on about for months and now is the perfect time to finally cross it off my TRB list.

Also, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Transfiguration and Potions (above TBR)

Animagus Training

Arithmacy – Balance Opposites: Read Something Outside Your Favourite Genre

Normal People by Sally Rooney. I think this is going to be our Reading Between The Wines book for April as I’ve heard nothing but good things about it and I’ve been really craving a unique love story.

Potions – Shrinking Solution: Read a Book Under 150 Pages

The Grownup by Gillan Flynn. I was really struggling to find something short to read until I found this one! I loved Gone Girl so I’m hoping that this book has that same intricate and mysterious feel to it.

Transfiguration – Animagus: A Book/Series that Includes Shapeshifting

Either A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer or Socery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson.
